About the German Wirehaired Pointer
The German Wirehaired Pointer is a rugged, versatile hunting dog developed to point, track and retrieve game across field, forest and water in any weather. Its defining feature is a harsh, weather-resistant wiry coat with bushy eyebrows and a distinctive beard that protect it in dense cover and cold water. Energetic, intelligent and strongly bonded to its family, the GWP is an enthusiastic worker and a loyal, sometimes single-minded companion. It tends to be devoted to its people yet aloof toward strangers, and can be assertive with other dogs. This demanding, high-drive breed thrives with active owners who can channel its stamina into hunting, sport or vigorous daily exercise.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The German Wirehaired Pointer was developed in Germany in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by blending Griffon, Stichelhaar, Pudelpointer and German Shorthaired Pointer stock to create an all-purpose gundog with a protective wire coat. German hunters prized function above appearance, producing a hardy, versatile worker. It was recognized by the AKC in 1959.
Temperament
GWPs are loyal, energetic and intelligent, forming intense bonds with their families while being naturally reserved or wary toward strangers, which gives them a protective streak. They can be dominant or scrappy with unfamiliar dogs and have a strong prey drive. Eager and trainable with a job to do, they need firm, consistent leadership and ample activity to prevent boredom-driven behavior.
Questions to ask a German Wirehaired Pointer breeder
- Are the parents screened for hip dysplasia, eye disease and heart conditions?
- Do the lines have proven versatile hunting temperament?
- How do the parents behave with strangers and other dogs?
Health considerations to discuss
Hip dysplasia. Joint screening of breeding dogs helps limit the risk of arthritis in this athletic breed.
Hereditary eye disease. Conditions such as cataracts and retinal atrophy occur; annual eye exams are recommended.
Bloat. Deep-chested build carries a risk of gastric torsion, so owners should manage feeding and know the warning signs.
