About the Gonczy Polski
The Gończy Polski, or Polish Hunting Dog, is a medium-sized scenthound from the mountainous regions of southern Poland, bred to track and drive game such as boar, deer and hare over rough, forested terrain. It has a short, dense black-and-tan coat, a strong athletic frame and a deep, sonorous voice used to signal quarry to hunters. Hardy and weather-resistant, it works with great persistence and a fine cold nose. While devoted and gentle with its own family, it retains a powerful hunting instinct and independence that make it primarily a working dog. It needs vigorous daily exercise, secure fencing and ideally an active outdoor lifestyle to be content.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Gończy Polski was developed and standardized in the 20th century, largely through the efforts of Polish breeder Colonel Józef Pawusiewicz, from old Polish hound types used for centuries in the Carpathian and other highland regions. It was distinguished from the larger Ogar Polski (Polish Hound) as a lighter, more agile mountain hunter. The FCI recognized the breed in 2006.
Temperament
Gończy Polski hounds are gentle, calm and affectionate with their families but energetic and single-minded when hunting. They have a resonant, frequently used voice and a strong drive to follow scent, which makes recall training challenging. Sociable with other dogs from their pack background, they need experienced owners who can meet their exercise and mental demands.
