About the Grand Bleu de Gascogne

The Grand Bleu de Gascogne is one of the oldest and most distinguished French scenthounds, a large, noble hound famed for its striking "blue" coat, a black-mottled ticking over white that gives a bluish sheen, offset by tan points and a solemn, dignified expression. Bred in southwestern France to trail large game such as boar, deer and wolf, it is a slow, methodical cold-nose tracker with tremendous stamina and a deep, mournful bay. Calm, gentle and affectionate, it is more placid than many hounds but retains a powerful hunting drive and roaming instinct. It suits active owners or hunters who can offer plenty of exercise, space and a scent-driven outlet.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Grand Bleu de Gascogne originated in the Gascony region of southwestern France and is descended from ancient scenthounds, with a lineage often traced back centuries to hounds used for hunting wolf and large game. It influenced numerous other blue-mottled French and American hounds, including the Bluetick Coonhound. Recognized by the FCI and UKC, it remains a working scenthound and rare companion.

Health considerations to discuss

Ear infections. Very long, low-set ears trap moisture and debris and require regular cleaning.

Hip dysplasia. Screening breeding dogs is recommended for this large hound.

Bloat. The deep chest carries a risk of gastric torsion, so managed feeding and symptom awareness are advised.
