About the Grand Griffon Vendeen

The Grand Griffon Vendéen is the largest and most ancient of the four Vendéen griffon scenthounds, a rugged, rough-coated French pack hound bred to hunt large game such as boar and deer over the difficult terrain of the Vendée. It carries a harsh, shaggy, weather-resistant coat, a proud head with bushy brows and beard, and a powerful, athletic frame. Independent, spirited and strongly driven, it is a determined and passionate hunter with a resonant voice and remarkable endurance. Kept primarily as a working hound, it is less numerous and more demanding than its smaller Vendéen relatives. It requires experienced owners able to provide extensive exercise and a genuine hunting outlet.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • Hardy, weather-resistant coat and great endurance
  • Passionate, capable big-game hunter
  • Loyal and affectionate with its handlers

Things to consider

  • Headstrong and independent, needing experienced handling
  • Very high exercise requirements and strong prey drive
  • Rare working breed, seldom suited to pet homes

History

The Grand Griffon Vendéen is the ancestral stock from which the smaller Vendéen griffons, the Briquet, Grand Basset and Petit Basset, were developed. It descends from ancient rough-coated French hunting hounds of the Vendée region used for big game. Recognized by the FCI, it remains rare and is maintained chiefly by hunters for pack work on large quarry.

Temperament

The Grand Griffon Vendéen is bold, energetic and headstrong, with a passionate hunting drive and considerable independence. It is affectionate and loyal with its handlers and sociable within the pack, but its strong will and prey drive make it more challenging than the smaller Vendéen hounds. It needs confident, patient handling and a genuine working purpose to thrive.

Health considerations to discuss

Hip dysplasia. Joint screening of breeding stock is advisable in this large, athletic hound.

Bloat. As a deep-chested breed, it carries some risk of gastric torsion; managed feeding is prudent.
