About the Greenland Dog
The Greenland Dog is an ancient, powerful Arctic sled dog bred by the Inuit for hauling heavy loads over ice and for hunting seal and polar bear. A robust spitz-type of great strength and endurance, it has a dense double coat, a wedge-shaped head, small erect ears and a bushy tail curled over the back, and comes in many colors. Built for work in extreme cold, it is exceptionally hardy, independent and energetic, with a strong pack drive and powerful prey instinct. Loyal and affectionate within its group but reserved with strangers, it is not a typical pet; it needs vast exercise, cold-tolerant living, secure containment and experienced owners familiar with primitive northern breeds.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Greenland Dog is one of the oldest dog breeds, brought to Greenland by the Thule Inuit over a thousand years ago and closely related to the Canadian Eskimo Dog. For centuries it was indispensable for transport and hunting across the Arctic, and it remains a working sled dog in Greenland where its purity is protected. It is recognized by the FCI and the Danish Kennel Club.
Temperament
Greenland Dogs are bold, energetic and independent, bred for stamina and teamwork rather than obedience. They are affectionate and loyal within their pack and to trusted people but can be reserved with strangers and have a strong hunting and pack-order drive. Vocal and freedom-loving, they need firm, experienced handling and rarely make conventional companion dogs.
Questions to ask a Greenland Dog breeder
- Are the dogs from working sled lines, and how are they exercised?
- How do the parents behave with people and other dogs?
- What experience should an owner have with primitive northern breeds?
Health considerations to discuss
Heat sensitivity. The dense Arctic coat makes overheating a serious risk in warm climates; cool conditions are essential.
Hip dysplasia. Screening of breeding stock is advisable in this large, working breed.
High exercise dependence. Without extensive daily work the breed can develop destructive and escape behaviors rather than a medical issue per se.
