About the Griffon Bleu de Gascogne

The Griffon Bleu de Gascogne is a medium-sized, rough-coated French scenthound combining the distinctive blue-mottled ticking of the Gascony hounds with a harsh, tousled griffon coat. Bred in southwestern France to hunt hare, boar and other game over rough, brushy country, it is a hardy, versatile worker with a keen nose and a resonant voice, able to hunt alone, in small packs or with a hunter on foot. More rustic and workmanlike than the elegant Grand Bleu, it is enthusiastic, courageous and independent. Affectionate and sociable off the hunt, it is nonetheless a driven working hound that needs plenty of exercise, secure fencing and, ideally, a scent-based outlet to be content.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Griffon Bleu de Gascogne arose in the Gascony region from crosses between blue-mottled Bleu de Gascogne hounds and rough-coated griffon types, producing a wire-haired hound suited to dense, thorny terrain. It nearly disappeared before being revived by French breeders in the 20th century. Recognized by the FCI, it remains a working scenthound used mainly by hunters in France.

Temperament

The Griffon Bleu de Gascogne is lively, courageous and hardworking, with a passionate hunting drive and a resonant voice. It is affectionate and sociable with its family and compatible with other dogs from its pack heritage, but independent and strongly scent-motivated in the field. It suits active owners or hunters who can provide firm, patient guidance and ample exercise.
