About the Griffon Fauve de Bretagne

The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne is a medium-sized, rough-coated French scenthound from Brittany, one of the oldest of the French hound breeds. It wears a harsh, wiry fawn-colored coat ranging from golden wheaten to deep reddish-brown, over a compact, muscular frame built for hunting fox, hare and boar in dense, difficult cover. Courageous, tenacious and hardy, it was historically used even against wolves and remains a determined, independent worker with a good nose and stamina. Livelier and more headstrong than many hounds, it is also affectionate and sociable with its family. It needs active owners who can provide vigorous exercise, patient training and, ideally, a hunting outlet.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne dates back centuries in the Brittany region of France, where its ancestors, the fawn hounds of Brittany, were prized for hunting wolves. The breed nearly vanished after the wolf was eradicated but was revived in the 20th century by dedicated breeders. Recognized by the FCI, it is the parent of the smaller Basset Fauve de Bretagne.

Temperament

The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne is bold, energetic and independent, with a strong hunting drive and a determined, sometimes stubborn character. It is affectionate and loyal with its family and generally sociable with other dogs, but its self-directed nature and prey drive require patient, motivating training. It thrives with active owners who can channel its energy and tenacity.
