About the Griffon Nivernais
The Griffon Nivernais is a rustic, medium-sized French scenthound from the Nivernais region of central France, prized for hunting wild boar over rough terrain. It has a shaggy, harsh, unkempt-looking coat in grey, wolf-grey or fawn shades, expressive eyes framed by bushy brows and beard, and a lean, hardy frame that belies its endurance and courage. A tenacious, passionate hunter with a good nose and a deep voice, it descends from ancient French boar hounds and retains their gritty determination. Affectionate, loyal and sociable off the hunt, it nonetheless has a strong prey drive and independent streak. It needs active owners able to provide plenty of exercise and patient handling.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Griffon Nivernais descends from ancient rough-coated French boar hounds, including the old Chien Gris de Saint-Louis, historically used to hunt large game in central France. The breed nearly disappeared but was reconstructed in the 20th century by enthusiasts drawing on surviving griffon stock. Recognized by the FCI, it remains a working boar hound in France.
Temperament
The Griffon Nivernais is courageous, energetic and tenacious, with a strong drive to hunt and a stubborn, independent character. It is affectionate and loyal with its family and sociable with other dogs from its pack tradition, but its prey drive and self-direction call for patient, consistent training. It suits active, experienced owners who can meet its exercise and hunting needs.
