About the Haldenstovare

The Haldenstøvare, or Halden Hound, is a rare Norwegian scenthound bred to trail hare across the snowy terrain of southeastern Norway. Resembling a lighter, leggier foxhound, it wears a short, dense white coat marked with black patches and tan shading, and is built for endurance in cold conditions. Typically worked singly rather than in packs, it hunts with a keen nose and a musical voice, tracking game over long distances. Away from the field it is a calm, friendly and affectionate dog that bonds closely with its family. One of the least numerous Scandinavian hounds, it needs active owners who can provide substantial exercise and ideally a hunting or scent-tracking outlet.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Haldenstøvare was developed in the early 20th century around the town of Halden in southeastern Norway by crossing local Norwegian hounds with English Foxhounds and other imported scenthounds. It was standardized as one of Norway's native hare hounds. Recognized by the FCI, it remains rare, with small numbers maintained mainly by Norwegian hunters.

Temperament

The Haldenstøvare is calm, kind and affectionate at home, forming close bonds with its family and generally getting along with children and other dogs. In the field it is energetic, determined and driven by scent, hunting with persistence and a good voice. Independent when working but gentle and biddable domestically, it needs consistent training and ample exercise to stay balanced.
