About the Hamiltonstovare
The Hamiltonstovare is an elegant Swedish scenthound bred to hunt hare and fox alone rather than in a pack, tracking and driving game back toward a waiting hunter while giving a clear, ringing voice. Named for Count Adolf Patrick Hamilton, a founder of the Swedish Kennel Club, it carries a distinctive tricolor coat of black, tan, and white. Athletic and tireless in the field, it is nonetheless calm and affectionate at home, making it a rare hound that doubles well as a family companion. It needs substantial daily exercise and a securely fenced yard, as a hot scent can override recall.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Browse all puppiesWhere this breed shines
- Affectionate and gentle with the family, unusually so for a scenthound
- Handsome, low-maintenance short tricolor coat
- Versatile single-handed hunting hound with excellent stamina
Things to consider
- High exercise requirement; unhappy and destructive if under-stimulated
- Strong prey drive and a loud, carrying bark can challenge recall and neighbors
- Rare outside Scandinavia, so finding a breeder or breed-savvy help may be difficult
History
The breed was developed in the late 19th century in Sweden by Count Adolf Patrick Hamilton, who crossed German and English hounds including the Holstein Hound, Hanoverian Hound, and English Foxhound. It was shown under the Hamilton name in 1886 at one of Sweden's first dog shows. Long a favorite hunting hound in Sweden, it remains uncommon outside Scandinavia.
Temperament
Hamiltonstovare are even-tempered, friendly, and notably affectionate with their families, lacking the aloofness of some hounds. They are driven and independent when working a scent but relaxed and gentle indoors. Their strong prey drive and hound voice mean they do best with secure fencing and early recall training.
Questions to ask a Hamiltonstovare breeder
- Are the parents used for hunting, and how are they with children and household life?
- Have the breeding dogs been screened for hip dysplasia and hereditary eye issues?
- What socialization has the litter had with people and other animals?
Health considerations to discuss
Hip dysplasia. Ask for hip evaluation results on both parents.
Ear infections. Drop ears trap moisture; routine cleaning helps prevent problems.
Epilepsy. Reported occasionally in the breed; ask about family history of seizures.
