About the Hellenic Hound
The Hellenic Hound, also called the Greek Harehound, is an ancient Mediterranean scenthound bred to trail hare across the rugged, rocky terrain of Greece. Instantly recognizable by its glossy black-and-tan coat and deep, resonant bark, it is hardy, agile, and remarkably sure-footed on difficult ground. It hunts with great determination and a fine nose, typically in small groups, and is valued for its endurance in hot, mountainous country. Devoted and gentle with its own people yet reserved with strangers, it retains a powerful hunting instinct and needs an active, rural-minded home with secure boundaries and a genuine outlet for its energy.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Hellenic Hound descends from ancient Greek hunting dogs depicted in classical art and is considered one of the oldest surviving European scenthounds. It developed as a landrace across the Greek countryside and was recognized by the FCI in 1996. It remains largely confined to Greece, where it is still worked on hare.
Temperament
Hellenic Hounds are lively, brave, and devoted to their families but tend to be wary of strangers. They are independent and strongly driven by scent, showing great persistence on a trail. They need firm, patient socialization and are happiest with an active owner and room to work.
Questions to ask a Hellenic Hound breeder
- Are the parents actively hunted, and how do they behave around the home and family?
- What health screening, if any, has been done on the breeding dogs?
- How has the litter been socialized to people and everyday environments?
Health considerations to discuss
Ear infections. Pendulous ears warrant regular cleaning, especially after fieldwork.
Hip dysplasia. Ask whether parents have been hip-evaluated where possible.
Musculoskeletal injury. Hard hunting on rocky ground raises the risk of strains and paw injuries.
