About the Hovawart

The Hovawart is a large German working breed with a name meaning 'farm guardian,' bred to protect estates, livestock, and family across the centuries. Powerful yet agile, it comes in black, black-and-gold, and blonde, with a medium-long weather-resistant coat. Intelligent, versatile, and devoted, it excels at tracking, search-and-rescue, and protection work, combining a strong guarding instinct with a gentle, family-loving nature. It matures slowly and thinks for itself, so it needs consistent, positive training and thorough socialization. With a confident owner who provides a job and companionship, it is an even-tempered, deeply loyal guardian and partner.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • Versatile working dog capable of tracking, rescue, and protection
  • Devoted family guardian that is gentle with its own children
  • Balanced, even temperament when properly raised

Things to consider

  • Strong guarding instinct and slow maturity require early, consistent socialization
  • Independent thinker that needs a confident, engaged owner
  • Needs a job and daily activity; not suited to isolation or apartment neglect

History

The Hovawart is an old German guarding type mentioned in medieval texts, but the modern breed was reconstructed in the early 20th century by Kurt König and others, who crossed remaining farm guardians with breeds including the German Shepherd, Newfoundland, and Leonberger. It gained German recognition in 1937 and FCI recognition in 1964. It is valued today as a working and companion guardian.

Temperament

Hovawarts are confident, even-tempered, and strongly bonded to their families, with a protective but not indiscriminately aggressive nature. They are intelligent and independent, maturing slowly and responding best to patient, reward-based training. Well-socialized dogs are reliable, watchful family guardians.

Questions to ask a Hovawart breeder
