About the Hungarian Greyhound
The Hungarian Greyhound, or Magyar Agar, is an ancient sighthound brought to the Carpathian Basin by the Magyar tribes and used for centuries to course hare and other game on horseback. Slightly heavier-boned and more robust than the English Greyhound, it combines great speed with the stamina to run long distances over open terrain. It has a short, dense coat and a keen, intelligent expression. Affectionate and calm indoors yet fiercely fast and driven in the field, it forms strong family bonds and is gentle with those it knows. It needs regular sprinting exercise, secure fencing, and reliable recall management around small animals.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Magyar Agar arrived with the Magyars over a thousand years ago and became a prized coursing and hunting hound of the Hungarian nobility and countryside. Its numbers fell sharply after World War II and the collapse of estate hunting, prompting dedicated recovery efforts by Hungarian breeders. It is recognized by the FCI and remains uncommon outside its homeland.
Temperament
Hungarian Greyhounds are gentle, loyal, and affectionate with their families while remaining somewhat reserved with strangers. Indoors they are calm and undemanding, but they possess intense prey drive and love to run. Early socialization and secure containment support a well-adjusted companion.
Questions to ask a Hungarian Greyhound breeder
- Are the parents used for coursing or racing, and how are they in the home?
- Have the breeding dogs had cardiac and eye checks?
- How is the litter socialized to household life and everyday sights?
Health considerations to discuss
Anesthesia sensitivity. Like other sighthounds, low body fat affects drug metabolism; use a sighthound-aware vet.
Cardiac conditions. Ask about heart screening in the breeding line.
Musculoskeletal injuries. High-speed running raises the risk of strains and toe injuries.
