About the Hygen Hound

The Hygen Hound is a rare Norwegian scenthound developed in the 19th century to work harsh, cold terrain over long distances without tiring. Named for breeder Hans Fredrik Hygen, it is a compact, sturdily built hound with a dense, glossy coat in chestnut, yellow-red, or black-and-tan, often with white markings. Bred for endurance and a good nose rather than flashy speed, it trails hare and fox reliably in demanding conditions. Friendly, hardy, and even-tempered, it bonds closely with its family and makes an affectionate companion for an active, outdoor-oriented household, though its hunting drive and voice call for secure space and consistent training.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • Hardy and cold-tolerant with excellent endurance
  • Friendly, even temperament that suits family life
  • Sociable with other dogs from its pack-hunting background

Things to consider

  • Needs substantial exercise and a scent-work outlet
  • Vocal hound with a strong nose; recall requires training and fencing
  • Extremely rare, making breeders difficult to locate outside Norway

History

The Hygen Hound was created in the 1800s by Hans Fredrik Hygen, who sought a durable, cold-adapted hound by crossing German Holsteiner-type hounds with local Scandinavian dogs. It was recognized as a distinct Norwegian breed and is registered with the FCI. It remains very rare, found almost entirely in Norway.

Temperament

Hygen Hounds are friendly, alert, and even-tempered, forming strong bonds with their families. They are energetic and driven when hunting but calm and sociable at home. Their scenting instinct and stamina mean they need meaningful exercise and secure boundaries.
