About the Ibizan Hound

The Ibizan Hound is an elegant, deer-like sighthound from the Balearic Islands, prized for centuries hunting rabbit over the rocky terrain of Ibiza using sight, scent, and remarkable hearing with its large, upright ears. Lean and finely built, it is an astonishing athlete capable of high jumps from a standstill and explosive acceleration. It comes in short or wire coats, typically red-and-white. Gentle, quiet, and slightly reserved, it is affectionate with family and playful once comfortable, but its independence and prey drive mean secure, tall fencing is essential. It thrives with active owners who can offer sprinting outlets and patient, kind training.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • Athletic, agile, and a spectacular natural jumper
  • Clean, low-odor, easy-to-groom coat
  • Gentle and affectionate with family, generally quiet indoors

Things to consider

  • Exceptional jumper and escape artist; needs tall, secure fencing
  • Strong prey drive risks small pets and complicates off-leash recall
  • Sensitive nature does not tolerate harsh training

History

The Ibizan Hound is a very old rabbit-hunting sighthound long associated with Ibiza and the Balearic Islands, where island isolation preserved its type. Once thought to descend from ancient Egyptian hounds, DNA studies indicate it is a more recent reconstruction of an ancient type rather than a direct descendant. It was recognized by the AKC in 1979 and hunts rabbit in packs on its home islands.

Temperament

Ibizan Hounds are gentle, even-tempered, and affectionate with their families, though often reserved with strangers. They are athletic, agile, and can be mischievous and independent. Sensitive to harsh handling, they respond best to patient, positive methods and need secure containment.
