About the Karelian Bear Dog
The Karelian Bear Dog is a bold, black-and-white Finnish spitz bred to hunt large, dangerous game, including moose, boar, and even bear, holding quarry at bay with fearless barking until the hunter arrives. Powerful, tenacious, and highly independent, it is a national treasure of Finland and today also serves in wildlife management, where its courage is used to non-lethally deter bears from human areas. Intensely loyal to its handler yet aloof with strangers and often combative with other dogs, it is a working specialist, not a casual pet. It needs an experienced owner, serious exercise, secure fencing, and firm, respectful leadership.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Karelian Bear Dog descends from ancient spitz-type hunting dogs of the Karelia region spanning Finland and Russia, long used by hunters for big game. The breed was nearly lost during World War II but was reestablished from surviving stock, and a standard was set by the Finnish Kennel Club. It is recognized by the FCI and UKC and is famed for its use in bear conflict management.
Temperament
Karelian Bear Dogs are fearless, persistent, and intensely loyal to their people, but wary of strangers and frequently aggressive toward other dogs. They are highly independent and driven, bred to make decisions alone against dangerous game. They require experienced handling, extensive socialization, secure containment, and abundant exercise.
