About the Kemmer Feist

The Kemmer Feist, also called the Kemmer Stock Feist, is an American working feist developed by the Kemmer family in Tennessee to hunt squirrel and other small game with speed, a keen nose, and a treeing bark. Compact, muscular, and agile, it comes in a range of colors and coat lengths and is bred strictly for hunting ability, intelligence, and a strong treeing instinct. Bold and tireless in the field yet friendly and affectionate at home, it makes a devoted companion for active, outdoor-oriented families. With a high prey drive and abundant energy, it needs plenty of exercise, mental engagement, and ideally a genuine hunting or working outlet.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • Talented, driven squirrel and small-game hunter
  • Intelligent, trainable, and affectionate with family
  • Hardy and generally healthy with a low-maintenance coat

Things to consider

  • Very high energy and prey drive; needs a job or heavy exercise
  • Vocal treeing bark that requires management near neighbors
  • Recognized mainly by working registries; not a conformation breed

History

The Kemmer Feist was developed in the Appalachian region of Tennessee by the Kemmer family, who selectively bred traditional Southern squirrel feists for consistent hunting ability, temperament, and treeing drive over several decades in the 20th century. Feists themselves are an old American type of small hunting dog descended from terriers and other small breeds brought by settlers. The Kemmer strain is recognized by some working-dog registries and remains primarily a hunter's dog.

Temperament

Kemmer Feists are energetic, intelligent, and driven hunters with a strong prey and treeing instinct, yet they are affectionate, loyal, and gentle with their families. They are alert and eager, bonding closely with their people. They need substantial exercise, mental stimulation, and consistent training to thrive.

Health considerations to discuss

Patellar luxation. Small working dogs can develop knee issues; ask about checks.

Dental issues. Smaller dogs benefit from routine dental care.

Working injuries. Active hunting brings a risk of cuts, ticks, and strains; budget for care.
