About the King Shepherd

The King Shepherd is a large American herding-type dog developed in the 1990s by crossing German Shepherds with lines including the Shiloh Shepherd, Great Pyrenees, and Alaskan Malamute to create a bigger, sounder, family-oriented working companion. Standing well above the standard German Shepherd, it carries a dense coat that comes in coarse or long varieties and a substantial, powerful frame. Bred as much for stable temperament as for size, the King Shepherd is loyal, confident, and protective without excessive sharpness. It thrives in active homes with space, needs early socialization and consistent training, and forms deep bonds with its people. Not recognized by major kennel clubs, it is maintained through dedicated breed registries.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The King Shepherd was created in the United States during the early 1990s by breeders Shelley Watts-Cross and David Turkheimer, who sought a larger, healthier German Shepherd type with a calmer disposition. Foundation stock blended American and European German Shepherd lines with Shiloh Shepherd, and infusions such as the Great Pyrenees and Alaskan Malamute added size and bone. It remains a developing breed maintained by specialty registries rather than the AKC.

Temperament

King Shepherds are affectionate and devoted with their families while remaining naturally watchful toward strangers, making them capable guardians. They are intelligent and generally eager to please, responding well to firm, reward-based training and structure. Properly socialized individuals are steady and tolerant with children and other pets. Their size and energy call for an owner who can provide exercise, mental work, and clear leadership.
