About the Komondor
The Komondor is a large Hungarian livestock guardian instantly recognized by its long, corded white coat resembling heavy felted dreadlocks. Bred to blend in with and protect flocks of sheep, its cords insulate against weather and shield it from predators' bites. Beneath the striking coat is a powerful, agile dog that is calm and dignified at rest but fearlessly protective when its charges are threatened. Independent and self-directed by design, the Komondor forms strong bonds with family and can be devoted and gentle at home while remaining suspicious of intruders. It needs experienced ownership, space, and a job. Recognized by the AKC in the Working Group, it is a national treasure of Hungary.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Komondor accompanied the Cumans, a nomadic Turkic people, into Hungary around the 13th century, where it became the premier guardian of large flocks on the plains. For centuries it worked alongside herding breeds, guarding rather than driving sheep. The breed nearly vanished during World War II but was preserved by dedicated Hungarian breeders, and it earned AKC recognition in 1937.
Temperament
Komondorok are steady, self-assured, and intensely devoted to the family or flock they protect, showing courage that borders on fearlessness when guarding. They are independent thinkers bred to act without direction, which makes them affectionate yet strong-willed companions. Naturally wary of strangers and other dogs, they require early socialization and confident leadership. At home they are typically calm and gentle with their own people.
Questions to ask a Komondor breeder
- How do you socialize puppies for guardian versus companion homes?
- Are hips and eyes screened in your breeding dogs?
- Can you demonstrate proper cord separation and coat care?
Health considerations to discuss
Hip dysplasia. Common in giant breeds; verify OFA or equivalent screening.
Bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus). Deep-chested build raises risk; know the emergency signs.
Skin infections and hot spots. Trapped moisture in the cords can lead to dermatitis if the coat is not maintained.
