About the Kooikerhondje
The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is a small, elegant Dutch sporting spaniel-type historically used to lure ducks into traps called eendenkooien. Distinguished by a striking orange-red and white coat, feathered legs and tail, and black-tipped ear fringes known as earrings, it worked by flashing its bright tail to entice curious waterfowl. Lively, alert, and good-natured, the Kooiker is affectionate and eager to please with its family while often reserved with strangers. It is highly trainable, sensitive to harsh handling, and excels at agility and companionship. Recognized by the AKC in the Sporting Group, it remains a devoted, adaptable family dog with a keen, cheerful temperament.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Kooikerhondje worked for centuries on Dutch estates, tolling ducks into cage traps, and it appears in the paintings of masters such as Jan Steen and Rembrandt. The breed nearly disappeared by the mid-20th century until Baroness van Hardenbroek van Ammerstol revived it from surviving stock during and after World War II. Dutch recognition followed in 1971, and the AKC admitted the breed in 2018.
Temperament
Kooikerhondjes are cheerful, intelligent, and closely bonded to their families, thriving on inclusion in daily activities. They tend to be alert and reserved toward strangers, making capable little watchdogs, but are rarely aggressive. Sensitive by nature, they respond best to gentle, positive training and can be unsettled by harsh corrections or chaotic environments. Well-socialized individuals are friendly and adaptable companions.
Questions to ask a Kooikerhondje breeder
- Do you test for hereditary necrotizing myelopathy and von Willebrand disease?
