About the Koolie
The Koolie is an Australian herding breed developed by working stockmen to muster cattle and sheep across vast, demanding country. Highly variable in appearance, it ranges from medium to large and comes in solid, merle, and bi- or tri-color coats of short to medium length, prized for ability over looks. Intensely energetic, intelligent, and biddable, the Koolie works with a keen eye and tireless stamina, casting wide and backing sheep when needed. It bonds strongly with its handler and needs a genuine job or intensive activity to stay content. A versatile farm and sport dog rather than a show breed, the Koolie is registered through the Koolie Club of Australia.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines
- Exceptional herding ability, stamina, and trainability
- Versatile working and dog-sport partner
- Generally long-lived and hardy
Things to consider
- Very high exercise and mental-stimulation needs
- Herding drive can lead to chasing without an outlet
- Merle-to-merle breeding risks deafness and blindness
History
The Koolie traces to colonial Australia, where British herding dogs including the smooth Collie and merle-coated working dogs were bred for the country's harsh conditions, predating and paralleling breeds like the Australian Cattle Dog. Selected purely for herding function across generations of station work, it developed regional types rather than a rigid standard. The Koolie Club of Australia now maintains records and promotes the breed.
Temperament
Koolies are alert, driven, and eager to work, showing exceptional focus and responsiveness to their handler. They are affectionate and loyal with family but can become frustrated and destructive without adequate physical and mental outlets. Generally good with children and other dogs when raised together, they retain strong herding instincts that may show as chasing. They excel with active owners who provide structured jobs.
Questions to ask a Koolie breeder
- Do you avoid breeding two merle-patterned dogs?
- Are the parents hearing-tested (BAER) and hip-screened?
- What working or sport lines are behind the litter?
Health considerations to discuss
Deafness and eye defects (double merle). Merle-to-merle pairings produce dogs prone to deafness and blindness; responsible breeders avoid them.
Hip and elbow dysplasia. As an active working breed, joint screening of parents is important.
Progressive retinal atrophy. An inherited vision-loss condition; ask about eye testing.
