About the Kuvasz
The Kuvasz is a large, noble Hungarian livestock guardian with a dense, wavy white coat and a history of protecting royalty as well as flocks. Powerful yet agile, it moves with a light-footed, effortless gait belying its size. Bred for centuries to work independently guarding sheep and estates, the Kuvasz is intensely loyal and protective of its family, gentle and patient with those it knows, and naturally suspicious of strangers. It is intelligent but self-directed, requiring firm, patient training and early socialization from an experienced owner. Not a dog for the casual home, the Kuvasz is devoted and courageous. It is recognized by the AKC in the Working Group.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Kuvasz arrived in the Carpathian Basin with the Magyars and gained prominence in the 15th century under King Matthias Corvinus, who kept the dogs as guardians and hunting companions and reputedly trusted them above his courtiers. Later it returned to its roots guarding livestock. The breed was nearly wiped out in World War II and rebuilt from a small number of survivors; the AKC recognized it in 1931.
Temperament
Kuvaszok are deeply devoted and protective, forming strong bonds with their families and showing gentle patience at home while remaining vigilant guardians. Bred to make independent decisions, they are intelligent but strong-willed and not naturally obedient in the manner of biddable breeds. They are reserved and often distrustful of strangers, so early, extensive socialization is essential. Confident, consistent leadership brings out their best.

Health considerations to discuss
Hip dysplasia. Common in giant breeds; confirm OFA or equivalent screening of parents.
Bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus). Deep-chested guardians are at risk; learn preventive measures and warning signs.
Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD). A developmental joint condition; controlled growth and diet in puppyhood help reduce risk.
