Labradoodle Puppies for Sale
About the Labradoodle
The Labradoodle is a designer cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, originally bred in the hope of a lower-shedding assistance dog. As a hybrid it has no fixed standard, and outcomes vary dramatically with the size of the Poodle used (Toy, Miniature, or Standard) and the generation, so adult size can range from small to large and coat from straight to tightly curled. It is honest to note that a hypoallergenic or non-shedding coat is never guaranteed, especially in early-generation crosses where a flatter, shedding coat is common. Most Labradoodles are friendly, energetic, trainable family dogs that need real daily exercise and consistent grooming.
Every dog is an individual β genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

- Often lower-shedding when the Poodle coat dominates, though this is never guaranteed
- Intelligent and trainable, reflecting two capable working parent breeds
Things to consider
- As a hybrid, size ranges from small to large and coat from straight to curly, none of it guaranteed
- Early-generation dogs may shed more than expected, so hypoallergenic claims should be treated with caution
- Needs regular exercise and frequent brushing plus professional grooming to prevent matting
History
The Labradoodle is widely credited to Wally Conron of the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia, who in the late 1980s crossed a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle to try to produce a lower-shedding guide dog. The cross was later taken up by breeders worldwide, including in the United States. It remains a hybrid without recognition as a standardized breed by major registries.
Temperament
Labradoodles are typically friendly, energetic, and sociable, thriving on interaction and activity with their families. They are usually trainable and playful, though early-generation dogs can be quite exuberant. Temperament varies with the parents and generation.
Questions to ask a Labradoodle breeder
- Do BOTH the Labrador and Poodle parents have OFA or PennHIP hip, OFA elbow, prcd-PRA DNA, and eye clearances?
- Is this litter F1, F1b, or multigenerational, and how does that affect shedding and coat type?
- What size of Poodle was used, and what adult size and coat should I realistically expect?
Health considerations to discuss
Hip and elbow dysplasia. Educational, non-diagnostic. Both parents can pass joint disease; ask for OFA or PennHIP hip and OFA elbow clearances on both parents.
Progressive retinal atrophy (prcd-PRA). Educational, non-diagnostic. Ask for prcd-PRA DNA testing on both parent lines, since the Poodle and Labrador both carry it.
Hereditary eye conditions. Educational, non-diagnostic. Ask for a current CAER/OFA ophthalmologist eye exam on both parents.
