About the Lakeland Terrier
The Lakeland Terrier is a small, workmanlike terrier from England's rugged Lake District, bred to hunt and dispatch foxes that raided hill farms. Squarely built with a dense, wiry double coat, a rectangular head, and a jaunty, self-confident carriage, it was designed to go to ground and follow quarry through rocky dens. Bold, energetic, and endlessly curious, the Lakeland is a spirited companion with typical terrier tenacity and a keen prey drive. Affectionate and lively with family, it is intelligent but independent, needing consistent training and firm boundaries. Its low-shedding coat requires hand-stripping to keep its texture. Recognized by the AKC in the Terrier Group.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Lakeland Terrier developed in the Lake District of northern England, where fell farmers needed a hardy terrier to bolt or kill foxes that threatened lambs, often working with packs of foxhounds. One of the oldest working terrier types in the region, it shares ancestry with the Border and other northern terriers. It was standardized and named in the 1920s and gained AKC recognition in 1934.
Temperament
Lakeland Terriers are bold, cheerful, and brimming with self-confidence, showing the fearless, tenacious spirit bred for hunting fox in tight quarters. They are affectionate and playful with their families and generally friendly, though independent and quick-witted. Their strong prey drive and terrier stubbornness call for consistent, engaging training and secure fencing. Alert and often vocal, they make lively watchdogs.
