About the Landseer

The Landseer is a giant black-and-white water dog, regarded in continental Europe as a distinct breed and elsewhere as a color variety of the Newfoundland. Named for the painter Sir Edwin Landseer, who often depicted these striking dogs, it is taller and more leggy than the Newfoundland with a longer, more athletic build. Bred for water rescue and hauling, it is a powerful swimmer with a gentle, devoted temperament. Calm, patient, and famously good with children, the Landseer is a sweet-natured giant that bonds deeply with family. It needs space, moderate exercise, and grooming for its dense coat. The FCI recognizes the Landseer European Continental Type as a separate breed.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Landseer shares origins with the Newfoundland in the working water dogs of Canada's Atlantic coast, prized for rescuing drowning people and hauling nets and carts. In Germany and Switzerland, breeders in the early 20th century developed a taller, more lightly built white-and-black type, which the FCI recognized in 1960 as the Landseer European Continental Type. English-speaking registries still classify Landseer-marked dogs as Newfoundlands.

Temperament

Landseers are gentle, calm, and deeply devoted, showing the sweet, patient disposition that makes giant water dogs beloved family companions. They are especially good with children and tolerant of other animals, rarely showing aggression. Intelligent and sensitive, they respond well to gentle, consistent training and dislike harshness. Their protective instinct is expressed through steady watchfulness rather than sharpness.

Health considerations to discuss

Hip and elbow dysplasia. Common in giant breeds; confirm joint screening of both parents.

Subaortic stenosis. A heritable heart defect; cardiac evaluation of breeding stock is important.

Bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus). The deep chest raises risk; learn preventive steps and warning signs.
