About the Leonberger
The Leonberger is a majestic giant breed from Germany, prized for combining great size and strength with a gentle, patient, and family-friendly temperament. Sporting a lush water-resistant double coat, a lion-like mane, and a striking dark mask, the Leo is calm and steady yet playful, forming strong bonds with children and adults alike. Despite its imposing frame, this is a sensitive, biddable dog that enjoys moderate exercise and cooler weather. Owners must be ready for heavy seasonal shedding, significant grooming, and the space, budget, and comparatively short giant-breed lifespan that come with a dog of this scale.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Leonberger was created in the mid-1800s in the town of Leonberg, Germany, by Heinrich Essig, who reportedly sought a dog resembling the lion on the town crest. Large working breeds such as the Newfoundland and Saint Bernard figure in its background. The breed served on farms as a draft and guardian dog and was later rebuilt by dedicated fanciers after both World Wars sharply reduced its numbers.
Temperament
Gentle, calm, and confident, the Leonberger is patient with children and welcoming to its family. It is intelligent and eager to work with its people, thriving on companionship. Its steady nature makes it a poised presence, though its size demands early training.
