About the Majorca Mastiff
The Majorca Mastiff, or Ca de Bou (dog of the bull), is a powerful molosser from the Balearic island of Mallorca, historically used for guarding, bull-baiting, and dog fighting. Compact and muscular with a massive head, broad muzzle, and a short coat in fawn, brindle, or black, it presents a formidable, athletic build on a mid-sized frame. Despite its fighting past, the modern Ca de Bou is typically calm, confident, and devoted, showing loyalty and gentleness to its family while remaining a natural guardian. Courageous but not needlessly aggressive, it requires firm socialization and experienced ownership. Recognized by the FCI, it is a national breed of Spain's Balearic Islands.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Ca de Bou developed on Mallorca from Iberian mastiff and bulldog-type stock, influenced by English bulldogs brought during British rule of the island in the 18th and 19th centuries. It served as a butcher's and guard dog and in the blood sports of the era. After decline, Spanish breeders revived the breed, and the FCI confirmed its standard in the 20th century, classifying it among the molossoid guardians.
Temperament
Majorca Mastiffs are typically calm, self-assured, and deeply loyal to their families, showing affection and reliability at home. Bred as guardians, they are naturally protective and watchful with strangers while remaining stable when well raised. They can be dominant with other dogs and need early socialization and confident, consistent handling. Courageous and steady, they are devoted companions in experienced hands.
