About the Manchester Terrier
The Manchester Terrier is a sleek, athletic English terrier bred to hunt rats and course rabbits, blending terrier grit with racy, greyhound-like lines. Its short, glossy black-and-tan coat, clean build, and keen expression give it an elegant look, while its temperament is spirited, devoted, and observant. Bred in the industrial cities of northern England, it excelled in rat pits and vermin control and remains a lively, agile companion with a strong prey drive. Intelligent and eager, the Manchester bonds closely with its people, is discerning with strangers, and makes an alert watchdog. It comes in standard and toy varieties. Recognized by the AKC in the Terrier Group.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Manchester Terrier arose in 19th-century Manchester, England, where breeder John Hulme crossed a Whippet with a Black-and-Tan Terrier to create a dog skilled at both rat-killing and rabbit-coursing, the two great sports of working-class fanciers. It became the archetypal black-and-tan terrier. The breed was later divided into standard and toy varieties, and the AKC recognizes both.
Temperament
Manchester Terriers are keen, intelligent, and devoted, forming strong attachments to their families while remaining discerning and reserved with strangers. They combine terrier spirit and tenacity with a sensitive, observant nature, responding best to positive, engaging training. Their strong prey drive makes them enthusiastic ratters and calls for care around small pets. Alert and loyal, they are lively, clean, and affectionate companions.
