About the Mountain Feist
The Mountain Feist is a small, energetic American hunting dog bred in the rural South and Appalachians to tree squirrels and small game. Compact and athletic with a short coat in varied colors, pricked or semi-pricked ears, and a keen, alert expression, it hunts by sight, sound, and scent, chasing quarry up trees and barking to mark it. Bright, tenacious, and quick, the Mountain Feist is a spirited little worker with a big prey drive and endless energy. Affectionate and devoted to its family, it is loyal, playful, and clever, needing activity and engagement. A traditional squirrel dog celebrated in American folklore, it is recognized by the UKC as the Treeing Feist.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Mountain Feist descends from small terriers and hunting dogs brought by European settlers to the American South, blended over generations into a nimble treeing dog for squirrel and small-game hunting. Feists appear throughout early American history, mentioned by figures including George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Long a folk breed of rural hunters, it was formalized by dedicated registries, and the UKC recognized the Treeing Feist in 1998.
Temperament
Mountain Feists are lively, intelligent, and intensely driven when hunting, showing sharp focus, speed, and determination in treeing game. At home they are affectionate, playful, and devoted, bonding closely with their families and often good with children. Their strong prey drive and high energy require regular activity and an outlet for their instincts. Alert and quick to bark at game or intruders, they make spirited watchdogs.
