About the Mudi
The Mudi is a versatile Hungarian herding dog, medium-sized and lightly built, easily recognized by its wavy-to-curly coat and often naturally bobbed tail. Bred to drive cattle and sheep across the Hungarian plains, it is intensely energetic, quick-witted and adaptable, working equally well as a farm dog, agility competitor and companion. Mudik are bold with livestock and vocal watchdogs, alert to anything out of place. They form strong bonds with their people but can be reserved with strangers, and their sharp minds demand daily physical exercise and mental challenges to stay content and well-behaved.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Mudi emerged in Hungary in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a herding landrace closely related to the Puli and Pumi, only being distinguished as a separate breed in the 1930s by museum director Dezso Fenyesi. Numbers dropped sharply after World War II, and dedicated breeders rebuilt the population from survivors. The AKC granted full recognition in the Herding Group in 2022.
Temperament
Mudik are alert, courageous and highly trainable, thriving on having a job to do. They bond deeply with their families and are protective without being aggressive, making capable watchdogs. Early socialization tempers their natural wariness of strangers, and their high drive means boredom quickly turns into barking or destructive habits.
