About the Neapolitan Mastiff
The Neapolitan Mastiff is a massive Italian guardian instantly known for its abundant loose skin, heavy wrinkles and pendulous dewlaps. Bred for centuries around Naples to protect home and family, it is astonishingly powerful, steady and fearless, relying on its imposing presence to deter intruders rather than needless aggression. Despite the intimidating exterior, it is affectionate and deeply loyal to its people, often leaning its considerable weight against those it loves. This is a slow-moving, low-endurance giant that drools heavily, snores, and needs an experienced owner who can manage its size, socialization and firm, calm leadership from puppyhood onward.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Neapolitan Mastiff descends from ancient molosser war and guard dogs of the Roman Empire, refined over centuries in the Campania region around Naples as a farm and property guardian. The breed was formally documented and standardized in Italy in the late 1940s by breeder Piero Scanziani. The AKC recognized it in the Working Group in 2004.
Temperament
Neos are calm, dignified and intensely protective, forming powerful bonds with their families while remaining aloof and suspicious toward strangers. They are not naturally aggressive but are serious guardians who require thorough early socialization and confident handling. Indoors they are typically placid and affectionate, content to be near their people.
