About the Norrbottenspets

The Norrbottenspets is a small, agile Nordic spitz from the Arctic reaches of Sweden and Finland, traditionally used to hunt birds, small game and even fur-bearers by pointing and barking to hold quarry for the hunter. Compact and well-proportioned with a wedge-shaped head, pricked ears and a curled tail, it is a hardy, tireless worker built for cold terrain. Norrbottenspets are keen, courageous and independent in the field yet notably affectionate, calm and adaptable at home. Alert and readily vocal, they make attentive watchdogs, and their friendly, tidy nature suits active families who can provide plenty of outdoor exercise.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Norrbottenspets is an old landrace hunting spitz from the Norrbotten region of northern Sweden and neighboring Finland, used for centuries to tree and bay game birds and small mammals. The breed nearly vanished after World War II and was declared extinct before enthusiasts rebuilt it from surviving farm dogs in the 1960s. It is recognized by the FCI and Nordic clubs and is in the AKC Foundation Stock Service.

Temperament

Norrbottenspets are attentive, spirited and courageous hunters that switch to calm, affectionate companions indoors. They are alert and quick to sound an alarm, making good watchdogs, and generally friendly with people and other dogs. Their independent hunting drive means recall and secure areas matter around wildlife.
