About the Norwegian Buhund

The Norwegian Buhund is a medium-sized spitz herding dog, one of Norway's ancient farm breeds, built for driving livestock and guarding homesteads. With a compact, square body, tightly curled tail, prick ears and a dense weatherproof double coat in wheaten or black, it is agile, tireless and cheerful. Buhunds are exceptionally people-oriented, quick to learn and eager to please, which makes them responsive in obedience, agility and herding. They are also alert, vocal watchdogs that bond closely with their families. Energetic and playful, they need daily activity and mental engagement to avoid boredom-driven barking and mischief.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

The modern breed was standardized in Norway in the early 20th century, with the first breed show held in 1920. The AKC recognized it in the Herding Group in 2009.
