About the Norwegian Elkhound
The Norwegian Elkhound is a robust, ancient Nordic spitz bred to track and hold moose and other big game for Scandinavian hunters. Medium-sized and squarely built with a thick silver-gray coat, prick ears and a tightly curled tail, it is powerful, bold and astonishingly hardy in harsh weather. Elkhounds are confident, dignified and deeply loyal, forming strong family bonds while remaining alert, independent-minded watchdogs. They are famously vocal and free-thinking, a legacy of hunting on their own initiative. Energetic and durable, they need vigorous daily exercise and firm, patient training, and their dense coat sheds heavily on a seasonal cycle.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Norwegian Elkhound is one of Europe's oldest breeds, with ancestral remains found alongside Viking and Stone Age human sites in Scandinavia. For centuries it served as a hunting dog for moose (elk in European usage), a guardian and a herder. It was standardized in Norway in the late 1800s and recognized by the AKC in 1913 in the Hound Group.
Temperament
Elkhounds are bold, friendly and confident, devoted to their families yet independent and strong-willed in the field. They are alert and highly vocal, serving as effective watchdogs. Their hunting heritage gives them a keen nose, self-reliance and a tendency to roam if allowed off-lead.
