About the Norwich Terrier

The Norwich Terrier is among the smallest of the working terriers, a stocky, low-set little dog with prick ears that distinguish it from its drop-eared relative, the Norfolk. Bred in England to bolt rats and foxes, it combines terrier grit with an unusually affectionate, sociable temperament, generally getting along well with people and other dogs. Norwich Terriers are hardy, weatherproof and eternally curious, quick to dig, chase and investigate. Compact and portable yet sturdy and energetic, they need daily exercise and mental stimulation. Their wiry double coat is traditionally hand-stripped, and their bold, cheerful nature makes them engaging companions.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Norwich Terrier arose in East Anglia, England, in the late 19th century as a small ratting terrier, sharing origins with the Norfolk Terrier. The prick-eared and drop-eared types were shown together until 1964, when the English Kennel Club separated them; the prick-eared variety retained the Norwich name. The AKC recognized the Norwich Terrier in 1936.

Temperament

Norwich Terriers are affectionate, gregarious and less scrappy than many terriers, thriving in the company of their families. They are alert and make good little watchdogs while remaining generally friendly toward other dogs. Their working roots give them a strong prey drive, curiosity and a fondness for digging.
