About the Olde English Bulldogge

The Olde English Bulldogge is a modern American recreation aiming to capture the athleticism and health of the historic bull-baiting bulldog while avoiding the extreme conformation and breathing problems of the modern Bulldog. Muscular, medium-sized and powerful, it has a broad head and stocky frame but longer legs, a functional muzzle and greater stamina than the English Bulldog. Developed for temperament and physical soundness, it is typically confident, courageous and friendly, loyal to its family and often good with children. It still requires early socialization and firm, consistent handling, along with regular exercise to maintain fitness and manage its tendency toward weight gain.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • More athletic and sound than the modern English Bulldog
  • Loyal, confident family companion
  • Generally good with children
  • Better breathing and stamina than brachycephalic bulldogs

Things to consider

  • Breed standards vary between registries and breeders
  • Can be dog-reactive without socialization
  • Prone to weight gain and joint stress
  • Powerful dog needing consistent training

History

The Olde English Bulldogge was created in the United States in the 1970s by David Leavitt, who crossed English Bulldogs with Bullmastiff, American Bulldog and Pit Bull stock to reconstruct a healthier, more athletic bulldog resembling the working bull-baiters of the 18th century. The breed is recognized by the United Kennel Club (2014) but not by the AKC as a standard breed.

Temperament

Olde English Bulldogges are confident, friendly and courageous, forming strong bonds with their families and typically being affectionate with children. They are alert and protective without undue aggression when well socialized. Their strength and determination call for consistent training and clear leadership from an early age.

Questions to ask a Olde English Bulldogge breeder

  • Which registry standard do you breed to?
  • Are hips, elbows and heart evaluated on the parents?
  • How functional are the muzzles and breathing in your lines?
  • What temperament and socialization do the puppies receive?

Health considerations to discuss

Hip and elbow dysplasia. The stocky build makes orthopedic screening important.

Brachycephalic and skin-fold issues. Some lines retain shorter muzzles and skin folds needing monitoring.

Breed inconsistency. Because standards vary, health and structure depend heavily on the breeder's practices.
