About the Parson Russell Terrier

The Parson Russell Terrier is a spirited, square-built working terrier bred to bolt foxes from their dens during the hunt. Slightly taller and more leggy than the closely related Jack Russell, it is built to run with the hounds yet small enough to go to ground. Predominantly white with tan or black markings and either a smooth or broken (wiry) coat, it is athletic, fearless and tireless. Parson Russells are exceptionally intelligent and energetic, with a strong prey drive and an independent, mischievous streak. They excel at sports and earthwork but demand vigorous daily exercise and firm, engaging training to channel their considerable drive.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

  • Intelligent and quick to learn
  • Hardy and generally long-lived
  • Fearless, spirited companion for active homes

History

The Parson Russell Terrier traces to Reverend John Russell, a 19th-century English clergyman and fox-hunting enthusiast who bred working white terriers. The Parson type, taller and squarer, was standardized to distinguish it from the shorter-legged Jack Russell. The English Kennel Club recognized it in 1990 and the AKC in 2001 (as the Jack Russell Terrier, renamed Parson Russell Terrier in 2003).

Temperament

Parson Russells are bold, clever and energetic, with the tenacity and independence of a true working terrier. They are affectionate and playful with family but need firm, consistent guidance to manage their drive. Their strong prey instinct, love of digging and high energy make them a handful for the unprepared.
