About the Patterdale Terrier

The Patterdale Terrier is a compact, exceptionally tough working terrier from the fells of northern England, bred for hunting fox and vermin in harsh, rocky country. Smaller and more workmanlike than show terriers, it is muscular, wiry and utterly fearless, prized by working handlers for its grit, stamina and drive underground rather than for appearance. Coats come in smooth, broken or rough varieties, most often black, red or chocolate. Patterdales are intensely energetic, determined and independent, with a formidable prey drive. Devoted and lively with their people, they are demanding companions best suited to experienced owners who can provide serious exercise and outlets.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Patterdale Terrier developed in the Lake District and northern fells of England, named for the village of Patterdale, from working terrier stock refined by hunters such as Joe Bowman and later Cyril Breay and Frank Buck. Bred strictly for function, it was never standardized for the show ring by major kennel clubs. It is recognized by the United Kennel Club but not the AKC.

Temperament

Patterdales are bold, energetic and highly driven, with the tenacity and independence of a genuine working terrier. They are affectionate and loyal with their families but have an intense prey drive and can be scrappy with other animals. Their determination and stamina demand substantial exercise and firm, knowledgeable handling.

Questions to ask a Patterdale Terrier breeder

Health considerations to discuss

Patellar luxation. Small terriers can develop slipping kneecaps; ask about screening.

Eye conditions (lens luxation). Hereditary eye issues occur in working terriers; DNA and eye tests help.

Injury from working. As an active hunting dog, it is prone to bites and trauma; behavioral and physical management matter.
