About the Perro de Presa Canario
The Perro de Presa Canario is a large, powerful molosser from the Canary Islands, historically used for guarding livestock, working cattle and property protection. Heavily muscled with a broad, imposing head, a thick neck and a short brindle or fawn coat, it projects strength and calm confidence. The Presa is a serious guardian: territorial, self-assured and deeply devoted to its family, yet naturally suspicious of strangers. It is a dominant, strong-willed dog that requires an experienced owner, extensive early socialization and firm, consistent leadership. Properly raised, it is steady and affectionate at home, but it is emphatically not a breed for novices.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Perro de Presa Canario developed on the Canary Islands, likely from crosses of native island dogs with imported mastiff and bulldog types, used for guarding, herding and, historically, dog fighting. The breed declined sharply in the 20th century before a recovery effort beginning in the 1970s. It is recognized by the FCI and the AKC's Working Group and Foundation Stock Service records.
Temperament
Presa Canarios are confident, calm and intensely protective, forming powerful bonds with their families while remaining wary and territorial toward outsiders. They are dominant and strong-willed, requiring firm, experienced handling and thorough socialization from puppyhood. Well-raised individuals are steady and affectionate at home but remain vigilant guardians.
