About the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a small, rugged French scenthound bred to hunt rabbits and hare over the rough, brambly terrain of the Vendee region. Low to the ground and sturdy, with a shaggy, tousled coat, expressive eyebrows and a merry, wagging tail, it is built for stamina in dense cover rather than speed. The 'PBGV' is famously cheerful, extroverted and busy, with the independent nose-driven focus of a pack hound. Affectionate and lively with family and generally sociable with other dogs, it needs daily exercise, secure fencing against its scent-following wanderlust, and patient, upbeat training.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen originates in the Vendee region of western France, developed to hunt small game through thick, thorny undergrowth. It shares ancestry with the larger Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen, and the two were bred as size variants of the same rough-coated hound before being separated. It is recognized by the FCI and the AKC's Hound Group.

Temperament

PBGVs are happy, outgoing and confident, with an irrepressible, busy nature typical of pack scenthounds. They are affectionate and sociable with people and other dogs, but independent and easily distracted by scents. Their cheerful stubbornness calls for patient, motivating training and secure containment.
