About the Pharaoh Hound

The Pharaoh Hound is a sleek, elegant sighthound and Malta's national dog, traditionally used to hunt rabbits over rocky terrain by sight, scent and sound. Athletic and graceful with a glossy tan coat, amber eyes and large, erect ears, it is famous for 'blushing', its nose and ears flushing rosy when excited or happy. Fast, agile and alert, the Pharaoh Hound is playful and affectionate with its family yet can be aloof with strangers. Independent and sensitive, it dislikes harsh handling and responds to patient, positive methods. It needs secure fencing and safe outlets for its speed, chase instinct and considerable energy.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Pharaoh Hound was developed on the island of Malta, where it is known as the Kelb tal-Fenek ('rabbit dog') and used for centuries to hunt rabbits. Although its regal looks recall ancient Egyptian art, DNA studies indicate it is not a direct descendant of ancient Egyptian dogs but a more recent Mediterranean breed. It is recognized by the FCI and the AKC's Hound Group.

Temperament

Pharaoh Hounds are affectionate, playful and intelligent, devoted to their families while often reserved with strangers. They are sensitive and independent, responding poorly to heavy-handed correction and well to gentle, positive training. Their strong chase instinct and speed make secure enclosures essential.

Questions to ask a Pharaoh Hound breeder

  • Are the parents screened for patellar and hip issues?
  • How do the lines handle anesthesia sensitivity?
  • What is the temperament of the sire and dam?
  • How are puppies socialized to novelty and people?

Health considerations to discuss

Anesthesia sensitivity. Like many sighthounds, low body fat means anesthesia protocols should be breed-appropriate.

Patellar luxation. Occurs occasionally; ask about knee evaluations.

Cold and skin sensitivity. The thin coat offers little insulation; provide warmth and protection in cold weather.
