About the Plott Hound

The Plott Hound is a powerful, driven American scenthound and the state dog of North Carolina, uniquely descended from German hunting dogs rather than English foxhounds. Bred to trail and bay big game such as bear and wild boar, it is muscular and agile with a striking brindle coat and remarkable stamina, courage and determination. On the trail it is relentless, with a distinctive ringing voice and a fearless attitude toward large, dangerous quarry. At home the Plott is loyal, affectionate and alert, bonding closely with its family. It has high energy and a strong prey drive, needing serious exercise, a job to do and confident handling.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

The Plott Hound traces to Johannes Plott, a German immigrant who brought his family's boar-hunting hounds to North Carolina in 1750. Generations of the Plott family bred them to hunt bear and boar in the Appalachian mountains, largely without outcrossing to other hound lines. It is North Carolina's state dog and was recognized by the AKC's Hound Group in 2006.
