About the Podenco Canario

The Podenco Canario is a lean, athletic hunting hound native to the Canary Islands, traditionally used in packs to hunt rabbits by a keen combination of sight, scent and acute hearing. Slim and rangy with large, erect ears, a short glossy coat in shades of red and white, and an agile, springy build, it is superbly suited to the islands' rugged volcanic terrain. Energetic, alert and independent, the Podenco Canario is a tireless worker with a powerful prey drive. Affectionate and loyal with its family, it can be reserved with strangers and sensitive to harsh handling, needing plenty of exercise, secure fencing and patient, positive training.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Health considerations to discuss

Musculoskeletal injuries. As an active jumping hunter, it is prone to strains and trauma; conditioning matters.

Anesthesia sensitivity. Lean, low-fat hounds may need breed-appropriate anesthesia protocols.

General primitive-breed hardiness. Few specific hereditary diseases documented, but responsible screening is still wise.
