About the Polish Greyhound
The Polish Greyhound (Chart Polski) is a large, powerful sighthound from Poland, historically used by nobility to hunt hare, fox, deer and even wolves across open country. More robustly built than many sighthounds, it is muscular and strong-boned with a longer, harsher coat than a Greyhound, an aristocratic bearing and great courage. Fast and tenacious, it combines speed with the strength and determination to tackle large, defensive quarry. The Chart Polski is loyal, self-confident and reserved, deeply devoted to its family yet aloof with strangers and possessing a strong protective instinct. It needs firm, experienced handling, secure fencing and regular chances to run.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Polish Greyhound, or Chart Polski, is an old Asiatic sighthound type documented in Poland for centuries and prized by the nobility for coursing hare, fox and wolves. It declined severely after World War II and the fall of the aristocracy but was reconstructed from surviving specimens in the late 20th century. It is recognized by the FCI and is rare outside Poland.
Temperament
Chart Polskis are confident, loyal and reserved, forming strong bonds with their families while remaining aloof and watchful toward strangers. Bolder and more assertive than many sighthounds, they carry a notable protective and territorial streak. They have a powerful prey drive and need experienced owners, firm handling and secure space.
Questions to ask a Polish Greyhound breeder

- What is the temperament and stability of the sire and dam?
- How are puppies socialized to people and other dogs?
- What is the coefficient of inbreeding given the rarity?
Health considerations to discuss
Gastric torsion (bloat). The deep-chested build raises bloat risk; discuss feeding practices.
Cardiac disease. Heart conditions occur in large sighthounds; cardiac screening is advisable.
Anesthesia sensitivity. Like other sighthounds, it may need breed-appropriate anesthesia protocols.
