About the Polish Lowland Sheepdog
The Polish Lowland Sheepdog (Polski Owczarek Nizinny, or PON) is a medium-sized, shaggy herding dog with a profuse double coat that famously falls over its eyes. Compact, muscular, and remarkably agile, it was bred to move flocks across the Polish lowlands and is known for a keen memory and problem-solving intelligence. PONs are lively, watchful, and devoted, forming strong bonds and taking readily to the role of alert family guardian. They are confident and can be strong-willed, so they thrive with owners who provide firm, consistent leadership, plenty of mental stimulation, and regular grooming to manage that dense, weather-resistant coat.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The PON is an ancient corded-and-shaggy herding type documented in Poland for centuries, likely influenced by Asian herding dogs and related to the larger Puli and Bearded Collie lineages. The breed was nearly wiped out during World War II and was revived largely through the work of Dr. Danuta Hryniewicz and her influential stud dog Smok. It is recognized by the FCI and the AKC's Herding Group.
Temperament
Lively, clever, and self-confident, the PON is an alert watchdog with a strong protective streak and excellent memory. It bonds closely with its family and is affectionate but can be reserved with strangers and stubborn without clear leadership. Consistent training, early socialization, and mental work channel its intelligence productively.
Questions to ask a Polish Lowland Sheepdog breeder
- Are the parents screened for hip dysplasia and eye conditions?
- How are the puppies socialized during their first weeks?
- What is the coat and grooming commitment I should expect as the dog matures?
Health considerations to discuss
Hip dysplasia. Screen breeding stock; maintain healthy weight to protect joints.
Progressive retinal atrophy. Ask about eye testing and clear parental results.
