About the Pomeranian
The Pomeranian is a sled dog that got small without getting the memo. Beneath the famous puffball coat lives a bold, busy, spitz-type character - curious about everything, convinced of its own importance, and quick to announce whatever the neighborhood is doing. Poms make devoted, entertaining companions for adults and careful older children, travel beautifully, and live long. The coat is more manageable than it looks with steady brushing, but the alert barking and big-dog attitude in a five-pound frame are real traits to plan for, not quirks to hope away.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Search all puppies →Where this breed shines
- Long-lived, portable, endlessly entertaining companion
- Thrives in apartments with modest exercise
- Genuinely devoted to its people
Things to consider
- Among the most vocal small breeds - train quiet early
- Double coat sheds seasonally and needs regular brushing
- Too fragile for rough toddler play
History
Miniaturized from larger German spitz sled and herding dogs in the Pomerania region, the breed shrank dramatically under British royal patronage - Queen Victoria's kennel cut the size roughly in half - and reached its modern form by the early 1900s.
Temperament
Vivacious, confident, and attentive; a Pom considers itself a full member of household management and behaves accordingly.
Questions to ask a Pomeranian breeder
- Have the parents had patella evaluations?
- Is there collapsing-trachea history in the line?
- How do you handle coat transition (puppy uglies) questions?
Health considerations to discuss
Luxating patella. The classic toy-breed knee issue; ask for evaluations.
Tracheal collapse. Use a harness, never a collar, for walks.
Alopecia X (coat loss). Ask whether the line has a history of adult coat loss.
