About the Poodle (Miniature)

The Miniature Poodle packs the Standard Poodle's intelligence and elegance into a compact, sturdy frame. Ranked among the most trainable of all breeds, it is quick-witted, eager to please, and excels in obedience, agility, and trick training. Its dense, curly, low-shedding coat is a favorite of allergy-conscious owners but demands regular clipping and grooming. Lively yet adaptable, the Miniature Poodle bonds intensely with its people, does well in homes of many sizes, and remains playful into old age. Sensitive and perceptive, it thrives on companionship and mental engagement, and can become anxious or bark excessively if left bored or isolated for long stretches.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Poodle originated as a water retriever, most likely in Germany, with the breed later refined in France where it became a national favorite. The Miniature was developed by selectively breeding down from the Standard while retaining its working intelligence and temperament. The AKC places all three Poodle varieties in the Non-Sporting Group (Toy in the Toy Group), and the breed is among the most popular worldwide.

Temperament

Exceptionally intelligent, alert, and eager to please, the Miniature Poodle learns quickly and enjoys problem-solving. It is affectionate and closely bonded to its family, often sensitive to household moods. Well-socialized dogs are friendly and playful, though they can be reserved with strangers and prone to barking if under-stimulated.
