About the Portuguese Podengo
The Portuguese Podengo is an ancient, versatile hunting dog from Portugal that comes in three sizes (small, medium, large) and two coat types, smooth and wire. Lively, intelligent, and independent, it hunts by sight, scent, and sound, traditionally used on rabbit and other small game across varied terrain. Alert and playful, the Podengo makes a spirited, affectionate companion with a strong prey drive and a natural watchdog streak. It is hardy, agile, and generally healthy, but its independent, curious nature calls for secure fencing and patient, motivating training. This entry covers the medium and large varieties; the smallest (Pequeno) is registered separately.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

The FCI recognizes it in the primitive/spitz group, and the AKC's Podengo Portugueso (medium) is placed in the Hound Group.
