About the Portuguese Pointer

The Portuguese Pointer (Perdigueiro Portugues) is a medium-sized versatile gundog with an ancient lineage, historically used to hunt and point partridge across Portugal. Compact and muscular with a distinctive square head and soft, expressive face, it is renowned for its close-working style, natural pointing instinct, and exceptionally affectionate temperament. Devoted almost to a fault, the Portuguese Pointer thrives on human companionship and often wants to be at its owner's side. Energetic and biddable, it makes both a capable field dog and a loving family companion, needing plenty of exercise, engagement, and inclusion in daily life to stay happy.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Portuguese Pointer is one of the oldest pointing breeds, documented in Portugal since at least the Middle Ages and associated with royal hunting kennels. It is believed to have contributed to the development of the English Pointer through dogs taken to Britain by wine-trade families. The breed nearly disappeared before being revived in the 20th century, and it is recognized by the FCI and enrolled in the AKC Foundation Stock Service.

Temperament

Exceptionally affectionate and people-focused, the Portuguese Pointer bonds intensely with its family and dislikes being left alone. It is energetic, biddable, and enthusiastic in the field, with a strong natural pointing instinct. Its friendly, gentle nature makes it good with children, though it needs steady activity and companionship to avoid frustration.
