About the Portuguese Sheepdog

The Portuguese Sheepdog (Cao da Serra de Aires) is a medium-sized, shaggy-coated herding dog nicknamed the "monkey dog" for its long facial hair and lively, expressive face. Bred to work sheep, goats, and cattle in Portugal's Alentejo region, it is agile, intelligent, and intensely devoted to its shepherd, following commands with quick enthusiasm. Its rustic single coat gives it a distinctive tousled look. Energetic and affectionate, the Portuguese Sheepdog forms strong one-family bonds, can be wary of strangers, and needs daily physical and mental work. Best suited to active homes, it channels its herding drive well into dog sports and outdoor activity.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The breed was developed in the early 20th century in the Serra de Aires region of southern Portugal, reportedly by crossing local herding dogs with imported Briards and possibly other continental herders. Valued for its stamina and loyalty on large estates, it nearly vanished mid-century before dedicated breeders revived it. It is recognized by the FCI in the sheepdog group.
